What is a Manicure ?

A Manicure or a "Mani" is a treatment meant to clean, shape, beautify and relax the hands. It can be quite a therapeutic experience if done right, and irritable if done wrong. When beauty technicians conduct a manicure, they cut, file and shape the nails and paint over them with the client's choice of color. The cuticles are tidied up and are followed by a rejuvenating hand massage.

Many believe it is better to go full DIY, but professionals would advise otherwise. Since applying a manicure and painting the nails perfectly can take years of practice to perfect, it is best left to the professionals. It involves a lot of attention to detail which trained experts can provide.

Types of Manicures :-

The following is comprised of some of the most commonly applied manicures provided by nail salons.

[A] Basic Manicure :

Referred to as the classic manicure by many nail salons, it involves all basic services like cleaning, cutting and filling the cuticles. Then the technician would shape and polish them according to the client's preference. Additional services would include nail art and a hand spa. A classic manicure is easy on the hands and can last up to a week at max.

[B] Hot Stone Manicure :

This type of manicure serves two purposes; to have the nails cleaned and provide a relaxing experience. In a hot stone manicure, hot stones are applied along with oil and a therapeutic massage. It involves all other services similar to a classic manicure and can last for a week. The polish should be removed after seven days to prevent the nail beds from drying up.

[C] French Manicure :

Was first introduced during the 90s and early 00s, and has now become a classic look among nail enthusiasts. It is typically distinguished by its baby pink or nude skin colour with white tips. This effect can last a little less than a week and can be removed at home using non-acetone nail polish remover.

[D] Gel Manicure :

Based on the same process as the basic manicure but instead of nail polish, the gel is applied and cured using a UV light. Post that a top coat is applied to seal it in. The results of a gel manicure can last for much longer up to about 3 weeks. It looks shinier and is less prone to chipping. It can be removed using pure acetone at home. However, if the polish is not applied properly then can be tough on the nails.

[E] Shellac Manicure :

Shellac and gel follow almost identical formulations. The only difference is that Shellac was invested in and trademarked by a brand name CND. It is designed to act as a fusion between nail polish and gel offering long-lasting durability against wear and tear.

It was formulated in a way that when remover is applied, the layer of polish will break off into tiny pieces. This nail polish manicure is intended to have both the properties of gel (durability) and polish (color and shine).

[F] Dip Powder Manicure :

Replacing the traditional method of applying nail polish, the nails are first coated and sealed then dipped in a powdered pigment of a specific color of choice. This approach requires far less precision as the excess powder is simply brushed off. Before dipping, the nails are treated to ensure the powder adheres. The resulting finish can last for more than 3 weeks and can be removed in 99% acetone.
